Writing a Book – It’s Out!!!
When I was sixteen I walked to a bar and was served a beer for
the first time. Between then and now a whole bunch of decades have come and
gone. Trust me, I’ve spent a lot of time
in bars all over, being either a patron, or a musician. The one thing I can
tell you is that things happen in bars that don’t happen elsewhere.
The funny thing about these odd occurrences is that while
the stories people come across are often recanted, some many times almost in a
Viking saga mode, they often are not ever chronicled in print.
So, instead of just laughing about some of the situations
I’ve seen, some being involved with, or just saying “How did that happen?” I
decided to write them down. What I ended up with were twenty-three short stories
that I’ve put in a book!
The book took six years to write. Mind you, I wasn’t like my
neighbor Ernest Hemingway, who lived a few houses up Whitehead St. and would be
up every day writing at nine in the morning and go until noon, after which he
would march down to what today is Captain Tony’s, for beers, rum, and perhaps
some fraternizing with an attractive new lady who was visiting. No, my writing
came when the spirit moved me. Honestly,
there were times that the book sat unattended for over a year. About 1/3 of the
book was written on Whitehead Street, while the rest was written at what we
call “The Conch Rock Shanty” around the corner on Thomas St. The entire book
was written in Key West however
The stories took place from New England to Olde England, and
from New Jersey to Coconut Grove, to Key West and more!
Check out the bar where Harley’s roar in and out of, and
another bar where drunks fall in slow motion! Amazing tales where one man has
aspirations of riding a ten-foot unicycle, yet another where a woman can see
spirits of family members! There’s also a hidden bar on a tropical island where
a pompous ass visits.
As I write this, exactly one week after its release, it has
three five star ratings!
