Story Behind The Song - The Greatest Country

"The Greatest Country" is a song I wrote in 2004. Many people are not familiar with it because to date, I've never released it. I do have a demo of it, however and a few stations play it from time to time.

Click the YouTube link above to hear it!

The curious thing here is: There is a sizable amount of people who feel this may very well be my best song.

I've been blessed in having been a Nashville published songwriter since 2000 with McClure and Trowbridge Publishing. Additionally, I've been in the Key West Songwriter's Festival, seven times. To the lay person, The Key West Songwriter's Festival may sound like a small, colloquial event. Actually, it's the largest songwriting festival in the world. The event is put on by Charlie Bauer, here in Key West, and BMI Nashville. The event has about 240 songwriters from around the world in it, so for me to be included in seven was a great honor!

Honestly, I can't say if it, or anything else I've written is my best? It's like picking out favorite children.

What I can do though is talk about the song and how it came about.

My second wife had three girls when I came into the scene. The youngest was 8, the next 11, and the oldest 14. We lived in Cutler Bay at the time and Key Largo was just over a half hour drive. The Caribbean Club, an incredible, rustic, historic, open air bar dating from the 1930's, became a Sunday expedition. We talked a lot of when the girls were grown, we'd move to Key Largo. We also talked about buying an RV and seeing the country!

Influenced by that, I ended up writing this song "The Greatest Country".

On the surface, because of it's name, it may come across as something of a gung-ho nationalist theme. Actually it's not, but rather a song that celebrates all of the places, as diverse as they are, that this country has to offer, in the setting of traveling.

I say all, but actually it's just a few select places. The song required a lot of editing, or it would have been as long as Alice's Restaurant!

The worst part of editing is that it really hurts! It's a lot like being the coach of a little league baseball team and having to cut some kids. With the songs, there are so many that so much went into, I stash the cut lyrics. Maybe I can find a better home for them down the line?

As I've said previously, I write the music first. You can have the best lyrics in the world, but if the song can't hold it's own weight, it will never be able to justify the story it's been entrusted to carry.

Musically, I was very happy with the song when I wrote it. The song is in the key of A.

The opening musical line is A  F#m7  Bm7 Esus
The next line is A  F#m7 B7 Esus

Strictly speaking, this shouldn't work The first line has a Bm7 and the next a B7. It is a contradiction that manages somehow to be a complement. The Bm7 and B7 continue to alternate, though during the lyric the B7 resolves on an E instead of the Esus,

The song's lyrics follow and the demo recording is above. Check out both and see what you think! Let me know if you think I should record it on my next release, after the upcoming EP, due out in 60 days! 😀

Key West - Old Town By Night

No one would contest the statement proclaiming Old Town Key West to be one of the most beautiful towns in the country. Many would proclaim it is the most beautiful. At night the area takes on a different persona, a bit more eerie and mysterious. No in a scary way, but more in a romantic, mysterious way.

Every area of what we call Old Town, is different, though all truly amazing. These pictures were taken on my dog walk near our home. It starts off at the beginning of Southard, takes a left on Frances, then another left on Angela, and again left on White St.

I hope you enjoy it!

I can't help but love the "Beware of Dog" sign on the fence!

Angela Street by the Key West grave yard

An old carriage house from back-in-the-day

These next few seem to be homes of the long standing Key West families.

This style of house is common in the area. This is one of several on White St. There are also more on Olivia. My friends Bobby and Chrisie DeVito live in one.

Cajun (L) and Tooloulou (R) are the reason for this particular blog! Thanks guys!!!

Fun Facts #1 "If you're not having fun, I'm afraid we're going to have to ask you to leave"

The Shanty Hounds creed and motto:

"If you're not having fun, I'm afraid we're going to have to ask you to leave"

The song that kicks off The Shanty Hounds newly released album Unleashed! is “Yippie Cayo Hueso!” Here are some fun facts about the song!

  1. Cayo Hueso is Key West's name in Spanish. Interestingly enough, it does not translate to Key West! When the Spanish first came to Key West they found human bones, the result of a native American war that had taken place, on the beach. Because of this, they named the island Cayo Hueso, which translates to Bone Key. When the English obtained the island chain in 1763, they thought Cayo Hueso ( say: cai o WAY so) it meant Key West, as it sounds phonetically similar and Key West is the farthermost island in the archipelago that had fresh water. Today, many will say it translates to “Bone Island”. Technically this is incorrect. If that were the case the Spanish name would be “Isla Hueso”. Of course a key is a low lying island...
  2. The song actually starts out with the chorus This is not all that common, but I've never followed the rules anyway! :-D
  3. In the chorus the last line is “An island in the stream”. Yes, this is a tip of the hat to former resident and author, Ernest Hemingway, who wrote the book “Islands In The Stream”. The islands in the book were Key West, Cuba, and Bimini. Hemingway owned the house on Whitehead Street until his death.
  4. In the first verse there is the line “Sailing out to Sand Key, a little bit north of the light” Sand Key these days is a shoal, not a key. It used to be a key however until a hurricane wiped it out, save for the lighthouse. The lighthouse keeper and her five children were tragically killed in the storm. The keepers house was destroyed, but the light was still in tact. The sands are always shifting. Islands pop up all the time. It's ever changing, so who knows if it will someday become a key again?

  5. If you've ever had the pleasure of watching pelicans fly/glide inches above the water, you'll agree that it's a feat of grace before your eyes. The line “Pelican flies like a B25 a half a foot above the waves” is a salute to Lt. Col. James Doolittle and his fleet of B25s involved in “The Doolittle Raid” in WW II. They flew inches over the water .. under the radar... really!
6) I wrote the entire song, however you'll notice Joseph Gowran is credited with co-writing it. Shortly after I wrote it I was showing Joe and our friend Gary the song. They both said that Joe often used the phrase “Yippie Cayo Hueso”. I had no recollection of it, but we hung out a good deal, so I must have. Because of that, I credited him with the co-write. 99.99% of songwriters don't do this. My feeling is that if, in this case, Joe never said it, the song wouldn't exist, so he gets a co-write credit. I did the same thing with my song “Raise My Glass To The Upper Forty-Eight” and my friend George Cornejo.

7) The song has something so extremely rare in the annals of Rock that the percentage would calculate something like .000,000,000,000,001%! "Yippie Cayo Hueso" has a rhythm guitar solo. Again, we like doing things others don't do, so long as it works. The rhythm guitar solo on Yippie Cayo Hueso works.

8) The song was written on February 23rd, 2013.

The song and album are available through all the major distributors. See the links below!
