As A songwriter published in Nashville (McClure and Trowbridge) and in London, England (Millennium Production Music), I thought I might give some pointers for those who are aspiring songwriters.
Today's suggestion: Be Versatile!
The Beatles were perhaps the most versatile bands to ever exist. How did they do it? Well, they'd have a subject in hand, say "A day In The Life", or "Paperback Writer". From there they would get an idea as to what the music would sound like for the subject matter.
Once they had the music written, they would then write the lyrics. How many songs by the Beatles sound the same? None. They were sticklers on even repeating certain catchy words that might have been used in other songs of theirs, making sure that they weren't used again.
In writing the music, this is one key place where versality can really come in handy! How many times have you heard a performer play and every song sounds the same? Don't allow yourself to fall into that trap.
I'm categorized as a Trop Rock musician. The musical artists I've listened to this week have been Miles Davis, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Antonio Carlos Jobim, The Allman Brothers Band, John Coltrane, Django Rheinhardt, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Makoto Ozone, Steve Stills, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Art Pepper, Rod Stewart ....
Take note: None of these artists are Trop Rock artists.
